Shape of Red

At first sight, Toko seems to have all that a wife could ask for, selflessly admiring and supporting her husband’s career and raising their daughter. But then she meets Akihiko again – the man who had already been the great love of her life ten years ago, and it turns out that he still is. Toko plunges head over heels into a passionate love affair while also taking a step towards self-determination by starting to work again. Will this be her path to happiness? In her literary adaptation, Yukiko MISHIMA questions the social restraints and expectations arising from traditional gender roles, presenting a multi-layered image of her film’s heroine.
