Kazuyoshi Kumakiri

Biography


Kazuyoshi Kumakiri is an acclaimed Japanese director who rose to fame with his 1998 thesis film “KICHIKU”, a brutal portrayal of student radicalism. A graduate of Osaka University of Arts, he is known for exploring the lives of social outsiders and people pushed to their psychological limits.

Throughout his career, Kumakiri has shifted seamlessly between gritty realism and high-concept thrillers. Key works include “My Man” (2014), which won the Golden George for Best Film at the 2014 Moscow International Film Festival, and his high-concept thriller “#Manhole”, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival in the Berlinale Special section. His recent film “Yoko” won the top prize at the Shanghai International Film Festival, solidifying his reputation for capturing human fragility through a distinct, often intense visual style.
